Well I will tell you. It is a type of an ape. Gibbons are also referred to as lesser apes, due to the fact that they are much smaller, they are pair bonded, they do not make nests, and they seem to resemble monkeys rather than apes. In fact, some people are known to refer to gibbons as gibbon monkey, gibbon ape or even gibbon monkey primate. Gibbons are small, slender, agile little fluffy haired apes that love to swing from branch to branch. They can actually swing from branches as far as 50 feet apart at speeds of 35 mph and they can leap up to 27 feet. How amazing is that? Wouldn’t you love to have been able to do that when you were a child playing in trees? I know I would. Gibbons are actually quite cute, mostly due to their small size. The males are a tad bit larger than the females weighing in at 15 pounds and reaching three feet tall. They are omnivorous creatures, but spend 75% of their time eating fruit. They are extremely social and are very active during the day. Gibbons typically live in a small family consisting of a mated pair for life and their offspring seven years or younger. Gibbons can live up to between 35 and 40 years. Unfortunately, the Gibbon is highly endangered, so the next time you go to the zoo and see these amazing acrobatic apes, be sure to saver the moment, because they are extremely special creatures.
