Orangutan Facts: I don’t know about you but the first thing I think of when I hear the word Orangutan is King Louie from the movie The Jungle Book. I can just picture that big reddish haired long armed Louie jumping around singing and throwing bananas. Come on admit it, you stopped and thought about it for a moment. Orangutans are very unique apes, they are considered to be the most arboreal of the apes. The word Orangutan is derived from the Malay and Indonesian words orang, which means person, and hutan, which means forest. So Orangutan means man of the forest, which fits them just perfectly because they like to spend most of their time up in the trees in the rainforest of Malaysia and Indonesia. Unlike other apes, Orangutans like to live in solitude, males and females usually only get together when it is time to mate. A female Orangutan will stay with their young until they are around 6 or 7 years old. A female Orangutan is usually 4 foot 2 inches tall and weighs around 100 pounds, where the males are usually 5 feet 9 inches weighting at least 260 pounds. Their prominent cheek flanges and much longer hair can recognize a more mature male Orangutan. Just be glad that when you mature your cheeks don’t get bigger. The Orangutans diet consists of 60% fruit. Their favorite is the fig tree, because it is the easiest to harvest and digest. Other food items that they will eat are shoots, seeds, bark and young leaves. They will even eat small insects and bird eggs if it strikes their fancy. A very interesting fact about Orangutans is that they can eat Strychnos ignatii, which contains the toxic alkaloid strychnine. There doesn’t seem to be any harmful effect on them except it makes them produce excessive saliva. According to a Harvard University psychologist, Orangutans are the world’s most intelligent animals other than man. He claims that they have higher learning and problem solving ability than chimpanzees do. For example, Orangutans were able to make hats out of leaves and make leakproof roofs over their nesting area. They also found that adults would teach younger Orangutans how to make certain tools in order to find food. So in reality, the Orangutan isn’t really that different from you and me, except for the obvious things like the long reddish hair all over our bodies, but you understand what I’m getting at. After all, our DNA is 97% just like theirs, so the next time you have an urge to climb a tree think about an Orangutan.
