Otherwise known as Phascolarctos cinereus, one of these adorable, ash-colored “bears” can certainly be your new best friend. Although Koalas are generally mentioned as “Koala bears”, they really are not bears at all. Despite this, early European Australians called Koalas their “Native Bear”. The name “koala” is an Aboriginal word meaning “no drink”. Nonetheless, koalas drink water, but not much due to their eucalypt leaf diet. The koala’s eucalyptus leaf diet causes them to smell like cough drops. Koala Bears spend about three of their five active hours eating an average of 500 grams of eucalypt leaves per day. Koalas tend to have a slow metabolism and spend most of their day sleeping. Just about 18 hours a day resting and napping. The average male koala weighs at about 12 kg, the female weighing 8.5 kg. Although generally quiet animals, male koalas have a very loud mating call that can be heard a kilometer away during breeding season. Newborn koalas are as small as jelly beans and are hairless, earless and blind. When they mature, their thick, gray fur protects them against rain. Those are just a few of the many facts that make this cuddly little bear fascinating. Do you want to know where to get the koala wrap-n-ride costume you see here in the picture?
